Spooky Liverpool

St James Cemetery in Liverpool is one of the most spooky graveyards I’ve visited in order to take photographs and there’s no chance I will go in there at night. I went in broad daylight and while I was there I was OK. Later on that night after viewing the various photographs I had taken, I began to get the chills, and thought I was being watched in my own home. I don’t think being bitten on my hand while I was there helped matters, as it’s now swollen and itchy as Hell.

I decided to photograph St James Cemetery after doing a search for old cemeteries in the North West of England. I came upon the history of it here at Michael Faulkner’s site and that was enough to draw me in. Then purely by chance I came upon Tom Slemen’s book ‘Liverpool Ghost Walk’ and read about the various hauntings this cemetery has to offer. Perhaps it’s this book that has given me the chills?

You will find St James Cemetery in the shadow of Liverpool’s towering Anglican Cathedral, and it is said to be the resting place of almost 58,000 souls.

You will see many more photographs of the cemetery in the gallery below.

You will also find some photographs of St Luke’s Church, which was bombed out in the Second World War and left as it was a reminder of the May blitz. Get a hold of Tom Slemen’s book for further information.

Tom Slemen’s Liverpool Ghost Walk

In 2003 Tom Slemen hosted a ghost walk attended by over 500 people. It broke the record for the most attended tour of Liverpool and was also the first public ghost tour of the city. The Liverpool Ghost walk is a guide to the haunted hot spots of the city, and takes in Bold Street, Leece Street, Rodney Street, St James’s Cemetery, Clarence Street, Brownlow Hill and Ranelagh Street. Whether you want to use the guidebook to embark on your own ghost tour of Liverpool, or whether you simply want to enjoy the tour from the safety and comfort of your armchair, the Liverpool Ghost Walk is a must. Visit Tom Slemen’s website for further information.
